Sam Downey
Sous Chef, Corte Madera

Sam Downey started at Pacific Catch in December 2007 as a sous chef at the Corte Madera location working alongside his friend of 25 years, Executive Sous Chef, Matt DiBenedetto.

Sam grew up in San Geronimo with his older sister Florie, dad Joe and mom Kendra. He loved growing up in West Marin because it is "one of the most beautiful places in the world." Sam graduated in 1996 from Sir Francis Drake high school in San Anselmo, CA. He then went on to attend California State University at Humboldt graduating in 2001 with a degree in Geography and a minor in Geology. In 2007 he completed the 2-year culinary arts program at San Francisco City College.

Sam started in restaurants when he was fifteen, working after school and on weekends as a dishwasher and prep cook at A New Moon Cafe in San Anselmo. In college he worked as a waiter at Avalon, a fine dining restaurant in Eureka, CA. After college he moved to San Francisco and began working at the Presidio Cafe at the golf course. He worked there for 5 years, starting as a line cook, moving up to kitchen manager and then on to sous-chef. Sam really enjoyed the banquets, weddings and most of all, the free golf for employees.

Sam's love for traveling has taken him to Germany, Italy, Greece, France, Switzerland, Spain, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand and the South Pacific. In high school he lived in Australia for 6 months. During his travels, Sam learned to appreciate different cuisines from around the world.

Sam's favorite hobby outside of cooking is playing golf. He also spends time exploring Northern California especially the lake Tahoe area where he goes camping every summer.

"I am honored to be a member of the Pacific Catch Team. I have really learned a lot and have enjoyed my first 6 months here."
